Licensure Examinations

Tradesman Exam: 24-Hour Training Program
Applicants for the Tradesman Plumber-Limited Examination must complete 24 hours of classroom training as follows:

  • a 6-hour Continuing Professional Education course (in the classroom)
  • the Occupational Safety and Health Administration 10-Hour Outreach Training
  • 8 hours of training on the International Residential Code and/or Uniform Plumbing Code

Journeyman Exam: 48-Hour Training Program
Applicants for the Journeyman Examination must complete 48 hours of classroom training as follows:

  • two 6-hour Continuing Professional Education courses (in the classroom)
  • the Occupational Safety and Health Administration 10-Hour Outreach Training
  • 8 hours of training on the International Residential Code and/or Uniform Plumbing Code
  • 18 hours of training on the commercial plumbing codes

You will only receive credit for a training course offered by a Course Provider approved by the TSBPE. Once you have completed the course, the provider will submit proof of your completion directly to the TSBPE.  Click here for a list of providers.

Exemptions
An applicant for the Tradesman or Journeyman exams does not have to complete the training listed above if the applicant:

  • is enrolled and in good standing with a training program approved by the United States Department of Labor Office of Apprenticeship;
  • has completed a training program approved by the United States Department of Labor Office of Apprenticeship;
  • has earned an Associate of Applied Science degree from a plumbing technology program that includes a combination of classroom and on-the-job training and is approved by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board;
  • holds a current Master Plumber License issued in another state; or
  • holds a current Journeyman Plumber License issued in another state.


Endorsement Examinations

Medical Gas Piping Installation Endorsement: 24-Hour Training Program
Applicants for the Medical Gas Piping Installation Endorsement Examination must complete 24 hours of classroom training  based on the current edition of the National Fire Protection Association 99 Health Care Facilities Code and including a minimum of four hours in the shop covering the proper assembly, purging, and brazing procedures for horizontal and vertical joints.

Multipurpose Residential Fire Protection Sprinkler Specialist Endorsement: 24-Hour Training
Applicants for the Multipurpose Residential Fire Protection Sprinkler Specialist Endorsement Examination must complete 24 hours of classroom training specific to multipurpose dwelling fire sprinkler systems and the National Fire Protection Association Standard 13D and covering the criteria included in the American Society of Sanitary Engineering Series 7000, as it relates to plumbing-based residential fire protection systems installers for one and two-family dwellings.

A Journeyman or Master Plumber who also holds a current RME-General or RME-Dwelling license issued by the State Fire Marshal’s Office, Texas Department of Insurance does not have to complete the classroom training to be eligible to take the Multipurpose Residential Fire Protection Sprinkler Specialist Endorsement Examination.

Water Supply Protection Specialist Endorsement: 24-Hour Training Program
Applicants for the  Water Supply Protection Specialist Endorsement Examination must complete 24 hours of classroom training covering the protection of public and private potable water supplies, as required by the plumbing codes and state laws and regulations and rainwater harvesting as outlined in the latest edition of the Texas Water Development Board’s Rainwater Harvesting Manual.
